Summer Reading Assignment

This summer, incoming Academy freshmen will be asked to read  Homer's "The Odyssey"  For additional information about the story, there is an attached study guide.  This guide is NOT for a grade.  It is simply a resource for additional comprehension of the story.

Prior to the school year starting, students are expected to complete a post-read assignment to submit the first day of school.  After reading the book, write a one-page reflection paper about the content of the story.  Features to include in the paper can be: character analysis; theme; examples of conflict (Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Society, Man vs. Self).  The paper must be typed, double spaced (you should have approximately 250 words on the page).  Students will be expected to format their papers during the school year in MLA format; although, for this assignment, MLA format is not required.  It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the discipline of MLA formatting so you are better prepared in the school year.  The book is a challenging read.  Here are a few recommendations I have for success:
  • Students should start early and read a little at a time. The novel is full of rich details, and it can be overwhelming to get through a lot in a short amount of time.
  • Students might want to partner up or read in a group to make sure they are getting everything.
  • Students are welcome to use outside help for the book, but should not try to substitute anything (e.g. Sparknotes) for reading the real text. However, if a student wants to read a chapter summary online or use Sparknotes to clarify details or information, this is fine in addition to reading the book.
